The details

The 18 Gangster Museum describes itself as a "living museum" that presents a cautionary tale to South African youth about the road to gangsterism and prison.

The Museum, built in a container, has a replica of a prison cell and is filled with evocative text and imagery. All the installations in the museum have been donated by ex-offenders who share how they were able to turn their lives around.

The museum is also a starting point for various township experiences offered by qualified tour guides, many of them ex-offenders: from their team. Tours include Gang Culture, research tours, surfing tours and cycling tours.

The most unique tour is the prison and community tour, during which guests are hand-cuffed and 'locked up' in the museum while they listen to prison songs and are served a prison breakfast: mongi and brown bread. On their 'release', guests can reflect and unwind with braai meat and pap at Rands.
