The details

The AVA (Association for Visual Arts) promotes contemporary visual art by established and emerging artists through exhibitions showcasing all media: from painting through to ceramics, photography, installations and performance.

Based in central Cape Town, the AVA has its origins in the South African Fine Arts Society, the first organised art body in South Africa founded in 1850. Today it remains a non-profit, membership-based art organisation whose aim is the advancement of visual art.

In 2001 the AVA formed a partnership with Spier, who through the donation of the AVA’s premises became its major sponsor. This partnership has secured the continuation of the AVA’s role in arts development and a selection committee endeavours to bolster the discursive and experimental nature of contemporary art.

The AVA also host a Lounge+ Podcasts airing contemporary art discussion. Three of the four gallery spaces in the AVA’s building are available to rent for private events.
