It is themed around the development and history of the Tulbagh Valley. The museum complex consists of four historic buildings in Tulbagh’s Church Street.
After an earthquake in 1969, it was decided that more importance needed to be placed on architectural heritage, and so the Oude Kerk Volksmuseum was born. The church building (House Number 1) shows visitors a good collection of Cape furniture and colonial artefacts. The third house in the museum complex is House Number 22, known as the Ou Volks Museum.
This is a small Cape Dutch pioneer cottage that has been restored and brings to life a quaint home and life as you would know it 200 years prior to modern times. House Number 6 is the Earthquake Museum which relays how the town of Tulbagh was rebuilt.
The Oude Kerk (Old Church) is one of the last surviving cruciform churches built by the VOC (Dutch East India Company) still in its original form. It features a unique collection of Cape furniture and a restored cemetery. Amongst the items one can find is the original table on which the capitulation of the Dutch to the British was signed in 1806.
