Vintage with Love presents a Lunch for Literacy at Waterford Estate (Friday 12th)

Join Waterford Estate for a delightful lunch with exquisite food, fine wine, friends, and a live fashion show featuring Habits and Therapy Boutique. Indulge in the finest second-hand fashion and spend a day giving the gift of literacy. Guests are asked to bring gently worn clothes for donation when attending. Vintage with Love collects and sells gently worn clothing to support literacy charities nationwide. To date, they have raised over R8 million for organisations like Shine, Realema, Community Assisted Schools, and Nuwe Hoop School for the Deaf in Worcester.

Note: the dress code for the afternoon is An Autumn Affair.

The internationally acclaimed South African-born actress and director, Dame Janet Suzman, is in South Africa and talks to Shakespeare specialist, Professor Chris Thurman, for one night only. This special talk coincides with the season of William Shakespeare’s Othello, adapted and directed by Lara Foot with design by Gerhard Marx, music by Kyle Shepherd, lighting by Patrick Curtis and featuring a stellar cast. The event provides audiences the perfect opportunity to watch the matinee or evening performances of Lara Foot’s Othello, before or after the talk.

Abdullah Ibrahim in Concert (Saturday 13th)

Ibrahim is one of South Africa’s greatest jazz icons and returns home to South Africa after a five-year absence to give two concerts (in Joburg and Cape Town) as part of a world tour. Recently Abdullah Ibrahim released a new, album, 3, a recording of two sets from London’s Barbican Hall. Cleave Guyton Jr (on flute and piccolo), Noah Jackson (on bass and cello) make up the trio and are featured on both sets with Ibrahim. The album includes the much-loved tracks Nisa, Barakat and many more, and comprises both the London performances.

If you’re feeling at a loss for things to do in Cape Town this weekend with the kids, here’s a great one for families or anyone wanting to come in from the cold, but still move their bodies a little. The Cave Golf course at the V&A Waterfront is an 18-hole mini-golf in-door layout suitable for players of all ages. The mini-golf course is part of Mineral World, which also hosts the scratch patch, rock shop and astonishing stones. They’re open on Sundays, too!

See Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Performed by World Cafe (Sunday 14th)

World Cafe is a highly-acclaimed ensemble consisting of Petrus de Beer (violin), Schalk Joubert (bass) and Stanislav Angelov (accordion). Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is probably one of the best loved Classical masterpieces of all time, enjoyed by old and young across the whole spectrum of music lovers. The original score was written for a string orchestra, church organ and violin soloist. This is a highly unique event, held at the legendary Alma Cafe restaurant and live music venue.

Take a Steam Train trip to Elgin (Sunday 14th)

Sunny skies and pleasant weather before the mists of winter set in make this weekend a perfect time to take your family on a beautiful day trip. The Ceres Rail departs from Harbour Bridge Platform (close to the Cape Town International Convention Centre), and meanders through Cape Town and its surrounds until reaching the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass. Arriving at the foot of the pass, the train embarks on an epic climb up one of the steepest railway lines in South Africa. Cresting the peak, the train snakes it way into the lush Elgin Valley before arriving at the Elgin Railway Market. The train departs from the market at 2.15pm to head back to Cape Town.
