Willowbridge Shopping Centre in Tyger Valley returns with their hugely popular Kids in the Kitchen workshop series from 24 June to 2 July 2023. This time around, they’re putting up some super Insta-savvy Bento Cake Decorating Classes to turn your little angels into mini pastry chefs. Classes are limited, so book ahead to reserve your space.
Bento cakes have been trending on social media for a while now. These mini lunchbox-sized cakes come with cute decorations and originated in 12th-century Japan. The phrase ‘bento’ translates to ‘convenience’, relating to the single-serving aspect of the cake.
Immersive sessions guided by Pastry Chefs
Budding bakers from 3 to 12 years old can explore their culinary creativity with a 45-minute class guided by Pastry Chefs. Each child receives two pre-baked vanilla sponge cakes, around 15cm, as well as assorted icing colours, cake decorations, fondant topper ingredients and the tools needed. For a fun twist, kiddos also get a chef’s hat and apron, so come with a fully charged phone to capture new memories.
Let the little ones learn how to ice a cake to perfection with buttercream and create smooth fillings and stackings. There’s also an easy-to-understand demonstration sharing nifty techniques and how to make a basic fondant cake topper, decorate borders, and get creative with other beautiful elements. Once complete, the little pastry chefs take their creations home to show off to the family.
Important information to keep in mind
There are four Kids in the Kitchen sessions running daily at 10am, 11am, 12m, and 1pm, each lasting 45 minutes. A maximum of 20 kids are allowed per class, so advance booking is essential.
These winter school holiday sessions are supervised and drop & go is welcome, but younger kids may have to be accompanied by an adult. Parents are also welcome to help the younger ones throughout the session.
Cakes and buttercream frosting contain eggs, dairy, and wheat, while cakes were baked in a factory that may contain traces of nuts. Classes are unable to offer gluten-free, dairy-free or egg-free alternatives. The colour of butter icing and fondant coating might vary depending on the availability of product.
